Introduction

I knew about Cookie Run probably around 2013-2015-ish, when LINE is still quite popular here in Indonesia. Back in the day, LINE offered various games, by collaborating with them, such as Cookie Run, Disney Tsum-Tsum, and more. But as time goes on, and it feels quite heavy to install both on your phone (you need a LINE app to login at that time, which is heavy on it's own), I didn't play this game anymore for years. Prior to read this article, you can watch the game teaser below:

Terms used in Game

  • Cookie(s) is a character that gamers are going to play as in this game, each also has its own uniqueness and special skills or moments. Can be levelled up until maximum Level 15.
  • Pet(s) is an assistant that will be used as a support to each Cookie. Same as Cookie, each has its own uniqueness and special skills. Can be paired with any Cookie, but better if paired correctly as it's the Cookie's Combi. Can be levelled up until maximum Level 15.
  • Treasure(s) are some special abilities that could support you during a race. Can be levelled up until maximum Level 12, but could be upgraded to with some tickets.
  • Magic Candy is another way to support your cookie, which will increase certain points depending on the candy level. Could be levelled up until level 5, and "blessed" until a certain level.
  • Costume is some "costume" that you could equip to your cookie. In return, there will be some bonus points, depending on what costume you equip.
  • Invocation Card is a certain card that you could equip to any cookie (one per cookie). This will add a certain point for certain actions you do. Up until now, I for myself still have not that much idea about the effect it gave...

Game Modes

Basic

In basic mode, there are four child modes, which are:

Main Story

This is for single player, each story has its own number of stages. As for me, the highest one I played was around 6-1.

Trophy Race

In this mode, you could race with eight other players from other worlds. You will race for a certain duration, and you will fight over the most scorer in each session.

Cookie Trials

This mode basically is for you to acquire rewards, and try the special moments from each cookie.

Breakout

Lastly, there is breakout mode, which consists of three episode:

  1. Main Episode: Fragrant Lotus Paradise. You will need 15 (fifteen) Cookie Combo here.
  2. Special Episode 1: Escape from The Oven. You will need 10 (ten) Cookie Combo here.
  3. and Special Episode 2: Black Sugar Pirate Ship. You only need 3 (three) Cookie Combo here.

Special

For Special mode, there are three child modes, which are:

Treasure Trials

Basically the same as Cookie Trials, but you will use it to try the Treasure.

Survival Run

This is to play with other players (64 players), with random challenge-cookie-pet-and-treasure. Super hard in my opinion so I rarely played this one.

Friendly Run

This mode is to play with one other player, whether from your friend list, or random from another world. You will need to finish a race with a certain challenge.

Guild Runs

This is a mode, where you will play/race in a certain stage with your guild. Your contribution will add points to your guild, and it will level up your guild rank too.

Other

This is a special mode, as for today (16 Dec 2021), there are three modes inside: Hero Cookie's Island of Memories, Cheerleader Cookie's Island of Memories, and Dr. Wasabi & Mustard Cookie's Memories.

My Review

For this game, I have played it religiously (at least once a day, even if I am just logging in to collect daily gifts) since 29 Oct 2021 until now. So that makes it around five to six weeks. I haven't spent any "real money" to buy any package offered on the game until now. Which is good, especially for me who's kinda struggling financially right now. Also it's a good thing if you wanna play a game legally, and support it's developers rather than pirating the game.

Game Play

The game play is simple, IMO. Gamer will play as a "Cookie", whose main idea is to "get out from the oven", by collecting jellies and items on each stage. All of these collected items then will be converted into points, relative to each item. After you reach the end of a stage, you will be rewarded with one to three stars (if you are successful), and some other rewards too.

Each Cookie here has an assistant, named "Pet". Each Cookie has it's own Combi Pet, even though you can match each Cookie with whatever Pet you want. But matching a Cookie with it's Pet Combi will benefit you better. You can also equip a maximum three "Treasure" to support your race. With at least these three support systems, you are good to go with the stage/race. You could enhance this support system, by applying other items such as Magic Candy, Costumes, and Invocation Card. But this is optional, not needed to be done, but could benefit more if applied.

And... That's it. Now let's run and jump through any stage and game modes.

Pros

  • It's a free-to-play game. Like seriously free. There is an ad(s), but it's not shoved to the gamer's throat, and you will watch ads only if you have intention to acquire some diamonds, and that's it. No other ad(s). And even if you didn't buy any available package, you could still upgrade your collections. No need to think twice.
  • A lot of reward. Seriously, a lot. Like I said before, there is no need to buy the available package on the game. Even though it's good if you wanna support the developers. But without buying any package, you could still level up your collections through all of these rewards.
  • Short duration. It's a casual one, which means you could play it in a short time, and there's no need to spend hours on a session. Each session could last around three to probably twenty-ish minutes, and that's it. You could come back anytime you want to.
  • Easy to Play. Game control is super simple, you only need to press the left button to jump, and right button to slide. And that's it.
  • Play with others, or not. You can play by yourself as a single player, or you could also play with other players from all around the world. Yep, each mode (aside from Story Mode), allows you to play with other players with the same or different level with you. There is no need to show face or identity to, so it's anonymously good for people who don't want their identity known to others.
  • Constant update. Which means that there's gonna be something new to expect from time to time, to keep the game too repetitive or boring from the same task.
  • Combi Generator by Dr. Wasabi. This feature will calculate which combi is the best one on a certain race from your collection. One of the most handy features IMO, but sometimes it doesn't line up the calculation correctly.
  • It's cute and unique. Ehe. The cookies are cute, the pets are cute, each special moment is also unique and cute on it's own. The music is also cute too. What else to say then? 😆

Cons

  • Huge notice for challenges. When you play the game, there are some challenges with rewards if you are able to do so. Prior to the latest huge update (26 November), this notice was shown quite big on the screen. It's kinda grey, and positioned in the centre. Sometimes, this notice makes it hard for gamers to see items that they need to collect on the race.
  • Ridiculously far gaps. Some stages also have this HUGE GAP that you need to jump to. Sometimes two taps on the jump button are not working, not even three, which end up as you will fall in that "gap", then you need to revive to continue or change the cookie. This is easily solvable if you have "Rescue Tickets". But if you don't then...
  • Super limited items for challenges. What I mean by this is... Sometimes you need to collect exactly the exact amount of certain items. And the amount? Only available in that exact amount, no more. If you miss one, then you will fail the challenge. Even if it's too impossible to do so. I wonder why they didn't bother to add at least one to five more items in certain stages...
  • Three stars? Probably quite hard if your cookie's level is not that high yet. In the early days of playing this game, I found it quite hard to reach full three stars on each stage. I think I could reach one or two stars at max due to my limited level and ability at that time.
  • Too much animation, sometimes. For this one, it's just... Hm... Rarely happens, but when it happens it really disperse your focus when playing. Sometimes there is just... a lot of animation happening on the screen, whether from your treasure's ability, from your special moment, from enemies on the screen, from pets, or others. This could be solved by turning on "Simple Backgrounds" option on setting, but sometimes I don't think that actually solves the problem...

Closing

To conclude, I think...

  • As a casual game, this is such a really good time-killer.
  • Especially when you don't need to spend much time, like probably just needing a quick break from stressful or tiring situations.
  • There is no need for you to spend much money too, as it's mainly a free-to-play game.

So, my rating for this game is...

😄👍🏻 So Far So Good

88/100 pts

There are some pros and cons like I described above. Some of the cons have been updated and solved in the latest update, so my rating for this one could be better than this article I think. Please stay tuned for the next article :)

Currently the game has received it's latest update, on 26 November 2021, with a theme entitled "The Miracle of Winter Gifts" You can see more details about this update here: Cookie Run: OvenBreak - 26 November Update.
